‘But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit.’ 1 Corinthians 6:17
Bible reading: Deuteronomy 30:11-20 (Go to the Bible passage)
A growing number of Christians is becoming aware of the fact that we are living in the ‘last hour’, as the Bible calls it (1 John 2:18). Of these days Jesus has said that - because of the increase of lawlessness - the love of many will grow cold (Matthew 24:12 NRSV). Now this is, of course, an interaction and that is clearly demonstrated in our Bible passage of today.
Moses has said, ‘Now what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you’ (:11). Who would still dare to claim this nowadays? Everyone is convinced that complete obedience to the law of God is impossible. Whoever is taking the law even a little bit seriously, will only listen to it to conclude that - of course - he has made a mess of it again, but that - fortunately - he can count on forgiveness of his sins thanks to the atoning death of Jesus Christ. And, thankfully, that in itself is undeniably true!
But God says that what He is commanding His children, is not too difficult for them; it is in their hearts so that they may obey it (:14).
But who is then right? The pious will say, that God cannot be mistaken. But who of us is willing to admit that we - therefore - approach the law with the wrong attitude? Do we not fail every day? We argue that anyone who would be able to uphold the law, would be perfect, which we are not. Yes, indeed. But if this is true, then do these perfect people exist at all?
Yes, they are those who choose life; by loving their God, listening to His voice and holding fast to Him, for the Lord is their life.
