The gospel is the message of freedom: bonds of sin and death are untied. And true freedom is the enemy of disorder (1 Corinthians 14:33). It is the very spirit of chaos that binds so many people in the power of its darkness, but where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
Freedom is a precious gift, for it restores man to his original state, to work creatively before the face of his God. God has created us as fellow-builders of His wonderful design of the creation. And all who submit themselves to the authority of the risen Savior, will experience release from the slavery of sin, and then enter the service of the Redeemer in perfect obedience to His will (Romans 6:22).
‘So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed,’ says Jesus (John 8:36). But this freedom also entails great responsibility, as Paul puts it, ‘I have the right to do anything (…) but not everything is beneficial’ (:23).
Those who belong to Jesus Christ want to be co-workers in God’s service (1 Corinthians 3:9), and long to make themselves useful for the coming of His reign on earth.
Whoever is freed by Christ, is also free to choose: he can start living for himself and use that freedom in his own interests (Galatians 5:13), but he can also comply to the glorious destination that God has prepared for us people. That is: to be creatively active in building a new heaven and earth.
Whoever is imbued with this glorious vocation, has increasingly less desire to be preoccupied with his own interests, but wants to live solely for the purpose of making others share in this.
