David had an eventful life. Sometimes he won a big victory and then he praised his God. Once king David sinned gravely and the prophet Nathan came to punish him. Nathan said to David, ‘Why did you despise the word of the Lord by doing what is evil in His eyes?’ (2 Samuel 12:9). David acknowledged he had sinned. ‘I have sinned against the Lord.’ And Nathan could - by the command of God - tell David, ‘The Lord has taken away your sin. You are not going to die.’
After that, David was allowed to lead a fruitful life for many more years. Not a prosperous life without troubles. One might say his life did not become a bouquet of roses. No, David had lots of troubles and struggles. But in all his struggles, David called upon His mighty God to help him reign his people.
Before David died, he commanded his son Solomon, ‘Observe what the Lord your God requires: Walk in obedience to Him, and keep His decrees and commands, His laws and regulations’ (1 Kings 2:3).
Do we want to keep the commands of God? No, not tuck them away somewhere in a drawer, to hide them and not think of them anymore. Keeping God’s commands means to carry them in our heart, considering them and obeying them, day and night.
If we believe in the Lord Jesus and take His words to heart, then we long to walk in His Light. Let us earnestly listen to the sometimes stern, but always loving words of Jesus Christ Who calls us out of the darkness of our scared existence to come to Him, and in Him receive the true life in the Light.
