‘Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, ‘Why did you make me like this?’’ Romans 9:20b
Bible reading: Jeremiah 18:1-11 (Go to the Bible passage)
‘Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, Israel.’ This is the word that came to Jeremiah when he went down to the potter’s house.
Oh, we prefer to be kings and priests (1 Peter 2:9); we wish to be more than conquerors; we like calling Jesus our friend. Does the Bible not call us His co-workers (1 Corinthians 3:9)? And Jesus Himself said that we are His friends (John 15:15)!
Indeed, the Bible does mention these wonderful things.
If, by God’s love, we learn to walk in His Light more and more, we will feel ashamed that we so easily claim God’s promises instead of gratefully receiving them with a humble heart, in wonder.
Jesus said, ‘The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John. Since that time, the good news of the kingdom of God is being preached, and everyone is forcing their way into it’ (Luke 16:16). Elsewhere in the Bible, these intruders are compared to the weeds amongst the wheat (Matthew 13:25) or to the invited who were not wearing wedding clothes (Matthew 22:11).
Throughout all ages, there have been intruders in God’s kingdom, like Judas was among the disciples. And Jesus will bear with them until the end, just as He loved Judas till the end. Anyone who worries if he is - perhaps - such an intruder himself, should decide to let himself be cleansed of all the influences of the preaching of cheap grace.
Let us seek Him - Jesus - Who so eagerly wants to be found. Awed by His Majesty, we will find how good it is to be clay in His Hand!
