‘These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the culmination of the ages has come.’ 1 Corinthians 10:11
Bible reading: Hebrews 12:25-29 (Go to the Bible passage)
The Bible verse of today shows clearly that we are not allowed to have a noncommittal conversation about the people of Israel. Everything that happened in the days of the Old Testament has become an earnest and warning message to us, on whom the culmination of the ages has come.
The Bible tells us that in the last days there will be scoffers who will say, "Where is this ‘coming’ He promised?" (2 Peter 3:4). If we not let ourselves be blinded by the false optimism of our times, we will see in all things that happen around us that the word of God - concerning the end of the ages - is becoming more and more fulfilled.
But precisely because we are living in ‘the last days’ we should take care that we do not refuse Him Who speaks (:25). What is meant here by ‘refusing Him’? Exactly what the Israelites did in the desert, right before they entered the Promised Land: hearing God’s words but not acting accordingly!
Not only our West-European culture is about to perish, the whole world is heading towards its end, as the Bible has foretold for thousands of years. But those who have put their trust in the Lord Jesus, will look up to God with a thankful heart. For we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken. Is it not wonderful that, in this shaky world, we may look forward to a Kingdom that cannot be shaken? Let us, therefore, not be drawn along by the pessimism of so many, but let us be grateful and worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our ‘God is a consuming fire’!
