‘Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.’ John 8:51
In this passage, the words of our Lord Jesus Christ tell us that love and obedience belong together. ‘Whoever has My commands and keeps them is the one who loves Me,’ said Jesus. But if we do not love Him, how will we dare to trust Him? Before God asks us to trust Him, He gives us the chance to get to know Him.
God met Moses at the burning bush before He commissioned him to lead the Hebrew people out of Egypt (Exodus 3:2). And God first revealed Himself to Gideon before He made him a judge of Israel (Judges 6:11-23). We could cite many more examples from the Bible - from the New Testament as well - just think of the announcement to Mary of Jesus’ birth and the calling of Saul of Tarsus.
No, God is not an alien, unknown power commanding us from infinity, but He descended from this infinity and became human, in the person of Jesus. And people who have come to love Him, do not want anything else but to obey Him.
When Jesus had again opened up the way to God by dying on the cross of Golgotha, He sent the Holy Spirit to earth, the Spirit of truth, to be with us forever. When - through the Spirit of truth - we come to know the true God, we do not desire anything else than belong to Him, obey Him in everything.
And when we come to obey Him in everything, we experience the wonderful miracle that the Father and the Son reveal themselves to us more and more, and through us to all who God makes our neighbors.
