Boxing day
‘I know Him because I am from Him and He sent Me.’ John 7:29
Bible reading: Hebrews 10:1-18 (Go to the Bible passage)
The extensive services of sacrifice we read about in the Old Testament, spoke about reconciliation, but never truly realized it. These sacrifices - which were repeated endlessly year after year - could never perfect those who offered them. It was only a foreshadowing, a reference to the sacrifice of Christ that still had to come.
The sacrifices gave rise to a desire for genuine salvation and completion, for those sacrifices were a recurrent reminder of sins. The sins were not taken away. Everyone who sacrificed, perceived clearly that the blood of bulls and goats could not take away sins.
Therefore David said, although all sacrifices were offered in accordance with the law of God, ‘Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me’ (:5). This is a prophecy from a psalm of David (Psalm 40:6). He did not speak about himself, but about the Son of David, the Messiah.
This Son - promised immediately after the fall of man – is the Lamb without blemish or defect. God Himself descended, made in human likeness, as a perfect man. Not perfect by our standards, but perfect because He was perfectly willing to provide Himself to do the will of God. He did not come on earth as a strong, invincible hero, but as a weak little child that lacked the most basic needs. No place to be born other than a stable.
No, humanity was not prepared for Him, but it was already written about Him in the scroll: He came to fulfill God’s will in a corrupted world, full of violence. He came for people who do not ask for Him anymore, but He still keeps loving them with a limitless love, up to this very day.
