Holy Monday
‘He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; ‘by his wounds you have been healed.’’ 1 Peter 2:24
Bible reading: Isaiah 53:5-7 (Go to the Bible passage)
If we had belonged to the twelve apostles, if we had been sent two by two, and had experienced that even the demons had submitted to us in His name (Luke 10:17), even then we have to be deeply aware that He was pierced for our transgressions.
How difficult it must have been for His loyal followers to really acknowledge that Jesus willingly suffered these mistreatments - like a Lamb to the slaughter - also for the benefit of those who yet had followed Him so faithfully.
Likewise, it must get through to our heart and life that – although we follow Jesus every step of the way, although we have authority to trample on snakes and scorpions, and to overcome all the power of the enemy (Luke 10:19) – still it should be our greatest joy that through Jesus’ faithfulness - until the bitter end of His suffering on the cross - our names are written in heaven.
That is why He let Himself be oppressed and afflicted, that is why He did not open His mouth. For our benefit, He let Himself - like a Lamb led to the slaughter - be crucified without opposition, while legions of angels were at His disposal, ready to answer to His call, to save Him from the hands of the soldiers and the servants of the high priest (Matthew 26:53).
Let us, who - just like the people in Jesus’ days - have gone astray like sheep and have turned to our own ways, let us be willing to be led again by the eternal faithful Shepherd. For, in His indescribable love, this Shepherd sacrificed His life by dying on the cross of Golgotha, bringing salvation to us from all our sins, so that we might live with God again, full of His peace!
