‘These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved.’ Acts 16:17b
Bible reading: Matthew 8:28-34 (Go to the Bible passage)
In the Bible a clear distinction is made between people bound by Satan and people possessed by Satan (Luke 13:16). In this passage we read about possessed people. Bound people are, as the word implies, not able to do anything: they are tied up. People who are possessed on the other hand, are driven to do things which they cannot help but do.
Demon-possessed people have a conscious spiritual life. Sometimes we think that only those who have been captured by the King of light are spiritually alive, but - in a different way - those who are possessed by the prince of darkness are alive too. Those taken by the King of light the Bible calls ‘born again’ and the others are called ‘demon-possessed’.
People who are born again (John 3) do not only long to obey the will of God, but doing His will is their life! In direct opposition to this, demon-possessed people long to do the will of Satan and they cannot do otherwise, unless God in His mercy comes and wakes a longing in them for the life in the light.
Those who want to do the will of God, understand and distinguish what His will is (John 7:17), likewise, demon-possessed people clearly distinguish whether something comes from God or not. When a demon-possessed person meets someone who truly walks in the light (1 John 1:7), he notices this immediately and he cannot remain hidden any longer himself.
Only in the light of God darkness is revealed as darkness. When the true light is lacking the works of darkness may even appear divine, but in the presence of Jesus demon-possession is revealed as true darkness. This is why the demon-possessed of our days are so difficult to recognize!
