‘A stone that causes people to stumble (…) because they disobey the message,’ 1 Peter 2:8
Bible reading: Isaiah 30:8-14 (Go to the Bible passage)
In the first church the Christians had no Bible, and the scrolls of the Old Testament were out of reach for those who had had to leave the synagogues.
Yet, there were flourishing Churches, for God spoke to them through His Spirit and guided them into all the truth (John 16:13). In the same manner, Abraham was justified because he kept God’s laws and commandments, whereas they were only written down some four hundred years later. God puts His Spirit in the hearts of those who trust in Him, and moves them to follow His decrees and be careful to keep His laws (Ezekiel 36:27).
But when we exchange our trust in God for dependence on oppression and deceit, we reject the word of God. Then the Bible becomes a sealed book to us, even though we might read it every day after supper and at bedtime.
If you feel that God’s Spirit is extinguished in your life, if you suffer from weariness of faith, go and find someone, whom you feel still walks with the Lord in his daily life. Kneel down together and confess to God and man, that you have exchanged childlike trust in God for misguided trust in yourself, in your own cleverness and intelligence. Confess that you have defended your cases yourself, instead of trusting the Lord. Confess all your sins, better too many than too few! Now is the time, for it is still a time of grace.
Why wait to come clean? Let us once again simply resume walking with Him! Or else - unexpectedly - our unconfessed sin will collapse on us, in an instant, mercilessly.
