‘Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command.’ 1 Kings 18:36b
Bible reading: Numbers 16:23-35 (Go to the Bible passage)
Oh, if only we had an attitude like Gideon who had the courage to ask, ‘Where are all His wonders that our ancestors told us about…?’ (Judges 6:13b). For how can we read the passage of today without wondering about this?
Maybe then we come to understand that in our time there are no people anymore who really know that they are called by God, like Elijah, like Moses, like all these people in the Bible. If now someone states we should not compare ourselves with these holy people, I would like to answer, ‘Why then is it written in the Bible?’
Paul says about the stories of the Old Testament, ‘These things happened to them as examples (for us) and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the culmination of the ages has come’ (1 Corinthians 10:11). We should not read this as some interesting story, but as a warning for us who are the people of the last days! Jesus says of the people of this covenant, ‘Whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than John the Baptist’ (Matthew 11:11b).
Therefore let us wake up and realize that it is not enough to be a church member, just like it was not enough for the people of Israel that they all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. Please understand, what it means that God was not pleased with most of them (1 Corinthians 10:2-5).
Even an anointed leader does not benefit us, were he Moses, Elijah or Jesus Himself. All depends on our personal, radical choice to move back from the tents of the wicked men and follow Him Who God pointed out to us: Jesus Christ, the Saviour and Redeemer of our sins.
