‘I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.’ John 13:15
To the Son of God it was a big humiliation to give up the glory He had before with the Father in heaven (John 17:5) in order to be made in human likeness. And He did this so completely that He did not stand out at all; Judas needed to point Him out by a kiss when Jesus stood - surrounded by His disciples - in the garden of Getsemane. But Jesus went even further in His humiliation. ‘And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross.’
Is this not unimaginable? He Who alone was immortal (1 Timothy 6:16) was willing to become obedient to death on a cross. And then to be aware that this passage begins with: ‘Have the same mindset as Christ Jesus’.
This mindset can only be born in us, if Jesus Himself is born in us. But how could Jesus ever dwell in our hearts if we still harbor selfishness, yes, also spiritual selfishness? As long as we just want to ‘possess’ the gifts God gave to His church, and we are not willing to ‘make ourselves nothing’ – we who are often so greatly blessed by God – as long as we are so selfish, how will the people around us come to understand that Jesus had this mindset - about which Paul writes - especially for them?
Let us no longer consider the blessings something to be used to our own advantage, but let us live out of the desire to share everything that we have received by His grace with our neighbors, even though this means the crucifixion of our own ego. Only then the cross of Jesus will truly become a redeeming message for this world again!
