This passage of the Bible depicts the core of the gospel in a very powerful way!
Here we read of everything a sinful woman did to express her remorse about the sins with which she had grieved the Lord. She did not care about the fact that she was the only female in an assembly of men, which was considered very inappropriate in those days. Her remorse drove her to Jesus and she confessed her sins in public. She did not dwell on the opinion of the people around her. Is it surprising that Simon the Pharisee was annoyed by her behavior? He did not love Jesus with all his heart, because he had not yet received forgiveness for his sins, although he knew Jesus.
Are we not like Simon? Do we not have to admit that we think the behavior of this woman is a bit over the top? If we are not aware of how Jesus has suffered in order to free us from our sins and bonds, then we will - at most - regret the consequences of our sins. If we do not recognize that we grieved Him Who Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross (1 Peter 2:24a) our heart will remain cold when we confess our guilt.
The Lord lives with the one who is contrite and lowly in spirit (Isaiah 57:15b). Who experiences this, can only kneel down with a humble heart at the feet of Him Who has fulfilled everything for us on the cross.
The more we acknowledge we fail in everything, the more we realize we need Jesus. In this awareness we will long ever more for the reality of His love.
