When Jesus stands at the door and knocks, this means that He stands outside and wants to come in. But what kind of door is meant here? Well, it is written in the letter from Jesus Christ to the church in Laodicea. So Jesus stands outside, knocking on the door of the church, asking to be let in. How is it possible that Jesus stands outside His own house? Who can defy God?
The answer is as clear as it is simple: we can!
We, who call ourselves Christians - followers of Christ - we have the power to grieve the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30). We can even quench the Holy Spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:19) that is: finish the working of the Spirit.
When we rather put our trust in our own insights and we have acquired knowledge, our self-confidence grows more and more, and then we lose the trust in the Lord Who has said, ‘Apart from Me you can do nothing.’ When we prefer to do everything ourselves, the Lord takes a step back, and before we realize it, He stands outside the door of our church and outside the door of our heart. But the wonderful thing is that He then does not leave us, but asks for entrance in His own house.
Why should we let Him in? We are doing quite well without Him, are we not? We are rich and we have acquired wealth… Or is that mere talk as if we are in a daze?
Before the great day comes, when everything must appear in His light, He knocks on our door and urges us, ‘I counsel you to buy from Me… salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.’ Only when we let our eyes be opened, we will see the truth. And when we see the truth, let us then repent while we still can!
