‘Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God.’ Romans 12:1a
Bible reading: 1 Corinthians 6:12-20 (Go to the Bible passage)
Is it not remarkable that God is so interested in our bodies? We often think He is only concerned with our souls, but this passage ends with the great command, ‘Therefore honor God with your bodies.’
The message that comes to us in this passage, is that we should not only honor God in the spirit, but also with our bodies, so: with our whole being here on earth. In this way He gets the full authority over our body.
Is that not something great? If the Spirit of Jesus gains full authority over our body, then the person of Jesus will also be formed in us and revealed to the world in which we live. But if we do not spiritually submit to the Lord, our ego will still be seated on the throne of our life, and the people around us will only see us and not the Lord, or worse still: mostly us and sometimes the Lord. This is indeed worse. For when we are still focused on ourselves - while people are looking at us expecting to see Jesus - then we defame His Name. Therefore, it is about time that we - as Christians - become fully aware that our body is not some private possession of our own, but the property of God alone. He has not only redeemed our souls from death, but He will also redeem our bodies from their bondage to this world, so that they will be like His glorious body.
But what will we do with a glorious body that will not be bound to this world anymore if our soul has not learned already to abide with Jesus in the heavenly realms? When our eyes are focused on that glorious future, then we surely want nothing else than honor God with our bodies too.
