‘Who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness, and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.’ Titus 2:14
Bible reading: Ephesians 2:8-10 (Go to the Bible passage)
In the days of Jesus on earth, a man asked Him, ‘Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?’
What peace and quiet are waiting for us when we come to find the answer to this question more important than the question itself. For really, there appears to be resistance in our hearts to truly listen to the answer. Why? Because we are too proud to accept that the divine answer to this question is simply: ‘Nothing!'
Nothing? Yes, for God has done everything for our eternal salvation when He made Jesus die for us all, so that we may live forever. ‘One has to believe that!’ we might answer, when we still think we must achieve something ourselves. But no, Paul says that faith is the gift of God.
And then we fall in the other extreme and say, ‘It has to be given to us….’ But no, it is given to us! And we are not forced to live by it, but we get the chance to do so. Every person has been given the opportunity to believe, because God - in Christ - approaches us, so that this gives us trust and faith if we only dare to admit that we cannot trust or believe anything or anyone, except God.
Through the years I have found that God convinces me of this more and more. And this makes my life so rich.
So in the end nothing remains, except God, in Whom we may put our trust more and more. Nothing else? But surely, that is more than anything! And what is more, there is so much to do. For in this communion with God we will be doing the work - till all eternity - that He has already prepared in advance for us to do. Not by slaving for Him, but by walking in His peace.
