‘Therefore God exalted him to the highest place, and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow…’ Philippians 2:9,10a
Bible reading: Isaiah 45:20-24 (Go to the Bible passage)
Idols are things we put our trust in besides the living God. And because we put our trust in so much besides Him, there is so little understanding of what really matters.
It is like Paul said: When we are no longer guided by God, no longer glorify Him as God above everything else, ‘Some will turn to meaningless talk (…) but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm' (1 Timothy 1:6,7). Thus those who trust scientific research more than they do God turn to meaningless talk and speak with great certainty, without actually understanding what they are talking about. Professing to be wise, God says, we have become fools and futile in our thoughts (Romans 1:21,22).
Who puts his trust in anything but Him, is blind and bewitches himself with fine-sounding words. But if - with a prayerful heart - we become immersed in the wisdom laid down in the Old Book, we will find that - besides God - there is no one who speaks truth. Only in Him is righteousness and strength! Then a desire is born to come and take shelter with Him, for He is a just God and a Savior.
The idol-worshipers throughout the world will be put to shame, for God did speak - so many centuries ago - and He will not revoke that before Him every knee will bow. That includes the vain talkers of these days and all who have raged against Him (:24).
Why should we still clench our fists?
Let us thankfully bow down before Him Who saves us from all this foolishness!
