‘Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out, ‘What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!’’ Mark 1:23,24
Bible reading: Matthew 8:28-34 (Go to the Bible passage)
It is embarrassing that - through the centuries - the ones who called themselves believers often had a problem with their perception of Jesus: what exactly to think of Him?
Likewise, the teachers of the law and Pharisees could not agree among themselves. But even the theologians of our age have a hard time understanding Jesus. They keep worrying about the question: ‘How to view Jesus of Nazareth? As the Son of God or as the Son of Man?’
The Bible explicitly says that ‘the person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God’ (1 Corinthians 2:14). By studying hard we can acquire a degree in theology, but that does not make us spiritual people. This can only happen through rebirth. People who are born of the Spirit are spiritual (John 3:6). Such people have no problem at all with this theological question, for they know Him Who gave them this new life and that is all they need!
Yet there are other people who know Him well. Those are the people who gained spiritual life through Satan instead of through the Holy Spirit. These people are possessed by the devil.
To many people it may seem strange, but today is no different from the days of Jesus. People without the Spirit can be made believe anything with regard to religious matters. Those possessed by the devil can clearly distinguish between empty religiosity and the reality of Jesus Christ. When Jesus - according to His promise (Matthew 18:20) - is among the faithful, His own people rejoice but the demon-possessed cannot endure. They flee or they let Jesus deliver them from the darkness!
