‘Miriam sang to them: ‘Sing to the Lord, for he is highly exalted. Both horse and driver he has hurled into the sea.’’ Exodus 15:21
Bible reading: Luke 8:22-25 (Go to the Bible passage)
How peaceful it must have been for Jesus and His disciples, every time when they were together in a little boat on the lake of Galilee. No hungry crowds and no Pharisees and teachers of the Law who were always attempting to trap Jesus with their trick-questions. But on the lake of Galilee another danger always lurks. When the wind just slightly changes direction, it can suddenly be compressed between two mountains into a violent storm.
And so it happened now. At first, it was very peaceful and Jesus fell asleep, a serene tableau. But then, suddenly, one of these dangerous storms emerged which - in a few minutes - whipped up high the waters of this deep lake. The disciples were fishermen, they knew the dangers of the lake. But now they were in distress. How violent this storm must have been. ‘Master, Master, we’re going to drown!’
Strange, that the storm and the incoming waves had not woken Jesus, but the cries of his distressed disciples woke Him up. He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters… ‘Who is this?’
There must be whole worlds of which we have not the slightest inkling. Jesus rebuked the forces of nature and they obeyed Him. But He also told His followers, ‘If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you’ (Luke 17:6).
Do we dismiss these things because we only accept what our ‘darkened’ understanding can comprehend? He who is transformed by the renewing of his mind (Romans 12:2) can only say, Oh, where is my faith? (:25).
