‘God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.’ John 4:24
Bible reading: John 4:1-30 (2) (Go to the Bible passage)
If anyone analyses the conversations Jesus had with people - looking for a method to preach the gospel - he will find nothing useful, for Jesus approached everyone differently. Jesus had great respect for every person. He knew what was in each person (John 2:25) therefore He also knew what to do to reach the hearts of the people.
If we really long to be useful for God to guide others to the Light, we definitely should not look for some kind of method; and we do not need to either, for God wants to give us the same wisdom Jesus had. ‘If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, Who gives generously to all…’ (James 1:5a).
Jesus followed the guidance of the Holy Spirit in His conversation with the Samaritan woman. The Spirit of God - Who wants to dwell in our hearts - will also teach us how to help others in our conversations with them. In this way we can learn a lot of the story of the Samaritan woman. To her amazement, Jesus was interested in her: He even went so far as to ask for her help. But actually, He only did so to help her.
If we receive compassion for others through the work of the Holy Spirit in our heart, then we too are willing to accept help from them because we long to reach their hearts. Accepting help makes us vulnerable and less threatening to others. If we follow this example of our Lord, maybe then our life with Jesus will become more apparent to our surroundings. Who knows, maybe they too will dare - just like us - to trust God and open their hearts for the Lord and believe in Him!
