It is totally unjustified to claim that Christians dare not be level-headed and prefer to live in illusions.
In many ways the Bible calls upon us to have a clear head. Actually, the unbelievers are more inclined not to be level-headed and - therefore - flee in all kinds of dreams. The increasing use of recreational drugs just proves this.
But… also many young churchgoers smoke pot…!
Being level-headed means - among other things - daring to face the truth. And the truth is distressing, even unbearable, for those who have not understood the great secret of being a true Christian. Really, if we have not learned to rejoice in the Lord always, it is better never to be sober anymore.
Jesus said, despite the increasing despair in the world through selfishness and unbelief, ‘See to it that you are not alarmed.’ (Matthew 24:6). Being alarmed is caused by lack of trust in God, and this means, being alarmed is rooted in unbelief. For whatever happens in this world, it is all ‘what Your power and will had decided beforehand should happen’ (Acts 4:28). If we become more aware of this, we will not be alarmed, but we will pray to be more enabled to speak His word with great boldness (Acts 4:29).
But how could we be bold to speak His word without rejoicing in the Lord? Therefore, Paul tells us that we should - in all circumstances - rejoice in the Lord Who will never forsake us. Let us now, more than ever, learn to keep our head and put our trust only in Him. Let us be willing to submit our mindset to His authority, and allow Him to fill our thinking with ‘whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable.’ So that the God of peace can truly be with us.
