‘So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind.’ 1 Corinthians 10:12,13a
Bible reading: Galatians 6:1-10 (Go to the Bible passage)
Among us - Christians - there is so often an atmosphere of weariness of the spirit and activity of the flesh. There are still people willing to organize some semi-religious activities, like Christmas parties. Besides, for anything new, usually, people can be found - that is - for a short time.
In this passage Paul says, ‘Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.’
But what is ‘doing good’?
These lines of the letter to the Galatians are brim-full with it: ‘restoring one another gently’…
Restoring one another happens often enough, but ‘restoring one another gently’? That is only possible if we are filled with the Spirit of gentleness (Galatians 5:23). How often do we restore each other in order to justify ourselves? No, Paul says, ‘…watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.’ We must, if we are standing firm - and are thus spiritual - restore others gently, like we would gladly have them do to us when we stand in need of it.
‘Carry each other’s burdens’. That is a very relevant line. People who have never really gone through anything themselves, are often the most indignant about others, and lack understanding of other people’s troubles. But those who passed under God's judgment themselves are very mild in their judgment of others, for has God not also judged them likewise?
Whoever is impressed by God's liberating judgment regarding his own life, desires to restore other people in the sense of bringing them back to the right way. That is no trivial task. Let us not be pretentious: this can only happen when we devote ourselves to others with the love of God.
