'You also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house,’ 1 Peter 2:5a
Did you ever notice how often in the Bible God asks us to be like Jesus? In the passage of our Bible verse of today (1 Peter 2:4) Jesus is called ‘the living Stone’. And then Peter says: ‘Come to Him, (…) you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house.’ In the passage of Philippians we read today, Paul writes: ‘Have the same mindset as Christ Jesus’.
Often we think it very pious to say that we are not like Jesus at all, but God is of a different opinion. He expects us to be just like His Son. Jesus came on earth not only to provide the purification of sin, but also to open the way for us to live a life which is fully devoted to God, a life we could never manage by ourselves and which we by nature do not want to live either.
‘Have the same mindset as…’ That is indeed impossible in this world. It is only possible if we submit our life in obedience to the Father, as Jesus did. And Jesus Christ did not do this to secure a place in heaven… after all that had been His home since eternity! But He was obedient on behalf of you and me, so that we too would be with the Father for ever and ever.
Being a Christian means: submitting wholly to the will of the Father on behalf of a perishing world. So also on behalf of the youth in our neighborhood, when we see them getting lost in darkness.
God wants to give us a pure compassion for souls, so that we do not want anything else but being used by Him, as living stones to build His church of the last days.
