‘Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart,’ Matthew 11:29a
Bible reading: Isaiah 48:12-22 (Go to the Bible passage)
We can all see, sooner or later, what becomes of people who determine their destiny themselves, led by their willful thoughts. The greatest intellect and the best skills of man are used to foster peace on earth, but the result is the opposite.
Once, when I was in Jerusalem, I asked a Jewish philosopher if he believed that a real peace between Arabs and Jews would ever be possible, and his answer was a firm ‘Yes’.
Amazed, I asked him how that would come about.
‘When the Messiah comes,’ he said confidently.
I asked him, ‘If only the Messiah can bring peace, why should we still make an effort?’
His simple answer to my question was, ‘Because He is coming!’
Hereby, all human wisdom is silenced. But how true it is! To what avail will all our efforts be in this world of increasing chaos, without the certainty that He will come as King of this world? Surely to no avail!
We must learn to live and think out of a new dimension, out of the faith in the coming of His eternal Kingdom. That is something we cannot teach each other.
But God Whose hand laid the foundations of the earth and Whose right hand spread out the heavens, He says, ‘I am the Lord your God, Who teaches you what is best for you, Who directs you in the way you should go. If only you had paid attention to My commands, your peace would have been like a river, your well-being like the waves of the sea’ (:17,18).
