'But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.’ Matthew 6:33
Bible reading: Matthew 13:44-52 (Go to the Bible passage)
Jesus says that we should not worry about what to wear or what to eat, but that we should seek His kingdom first, and then all these things will be given to us, ‘as a bonus’ we might say. Yet, we might reply, ‘How can I let go of all my earthly certainties if I do not know what the kingdom is? How and where should I look for it?’
Our mind cannot possibly grasp the kingdom, Jesus always depicted it in parables. In the Bible passage of today, we read that the kingdom is like a treasure, hidden in a field. So the kingdom is not easy for the taking. Jesus told Nicodemus, that no one can see the kingdom of God unless one is born again (John 3:3). But if we have seen the kingdom, how do we respond? Are we willing to give everything for entering the kingdom, which means, for living only for Jesus? No, this does not mean that we should sell all our possessions or start living as a hermit. No, what really matters is, where our heart yearns for. ‘For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also’ (Matthew 6:21).
It is obvious that we cannot serve God when we are still stuck to our earthly possessions. And these possessions are not only our house, our job or our money, but also our knowledge and our honor. Only if we let go of everything which can so terribly bind us in our lives – as if it were our possessions – and first ask for His will, only then our lives will become truly fruitful for His kingdom!
