The high priest was the anointed one (Exodus 29:7) and so he was a foreshadowing of The anointed One, the Messiah, Jesus Christ.
In Israel, the high priest had the highest authority. He was seen as a holy man. He was elevated far above other people, and often we also have a tendency to elevate Jesus far above us. We certainly have reason for that, for Jesus - our high Priest - is the Son of God (:14). But however understandable it is to think like this, yet He is not far above us, for in all things He was made like us (Hebrews 2:17). Here on earth He was completely human, just as we are, and He was tempted in every way, just as we are.
The fact that He was without sin in all the temptations that came across Him, lies in the great secret of how He was human here on earth. He was born of the Spirit, and He was deeply convinced that He could do nothing without the Father (John 14:10). And because here on earth He wanted to live in complete submission to God’s will, He became the Lamb without blemish or defect, that took our sins upon Himself. Jesus, born of God, yet completely human, understands our struggles as believers, but that is why He has said, ‘Remain in me as I in you, for apart from Me, you can do nothing’ (Joh 15:5).
Everyone who is aware of this tremendous reality, will find that Jesus is not far above us but very near, and when we remain in Him, He makes us like Himself! Whoever finds refuge in Him in everything, experiences that He is the way to the throne of grace. Then we will - in and through Jesus - find the presence of God Who gives grace to help us in our time of need.
