As it was in Israel in Ezekiels time, so it is in modern Christianity: how dare we come before the Lord while - in our daily life - we put our trust much more in everything else than in God! We have got insurances from the cradle to the grave, and many have even attempted to insure themselves - by the membership of their church - against a possible loss of eternal life.
Do not say we have no idols, for everything that we rely on besides God is an idol in God’s eyes. Since we have put our trust in all our modern assets, we have grown less and less dependent on God. Because of this, these securities have become a curse instead of a blessing. For everything that makes us trust less in God in our daily lives, becomes a curse, an idol.
Of course we continue to say grace before meals, but it has grown into a thoughtless habit, for who is still aware that our abundance is God’s blessing? Will God bless the crops less, if we no longer ask for it? Come on, that story is no longer credible!
God says in His word, ‘Should I let them inquire of Me at all?’ (:3) No. For we ourselves have forced the heavens to close by setting up our idols in our hearts even when we come before God’s face.
Since this is our attitude, how could God still stretch out His hand over us to protect us from evil and diseases? We would only stray from Him even further!
But if we humble ourselves before God and put our trust in Him again, then He will let Himself be inquired by us, so that He can teach us to follow His ways. Then we will be saved from extermination.
