Doing God’s will is inseparably linked with loving the Lord. When we truly love God, we long to live according to His will. That is why it is written in so many places in the Bible that God lays His laws in the hearts of people when He has mercy on them. Never does He impose burdens on His creatures that are too heavy for them to bear.
When we lose the heartfelt communion with God - granted to us anew by the accomplished work of Jesus on the cross - then keeping God’s commands becomes an unbearable burden, whereas in fellowship with God, His commands are truly delightful! For God’s commandments are holy, righteous and good (Romans 7:12).
So, when keeping His commands has become burdensome - because we have lost the precious communion with the Lord, due to unconfessed sins - the only way to regain the joy of the law is to return to Him by humbling ourselves and confessing our guilt.
When we don't do this, we resort to haggling with God’s will. We will excuse ourselves by saying that we are ‘only human’ and we then forget that only in Christ we are created in His image and likeness. Then we trick ourselves and others into believing that it is sufficient in God’s eyes if we do our best, even when we make a mess of it. This diabolical suggestion has made the church powerless in her testimony.
But if we seek again the communion with the living Lord in our lives - humbly confessing our guilt - then the love for God’s commands will be revived and will make our testimony clear again.
