'For we have a high priest who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.’ Hebrews 4:15b
Bible reading: Matthew 4:1-11 (Go to the Bible passage)
After Jesus had been baptized by John and the Spirit of God had descended on Him, He was led by the same Spirit into the wilderness, to be tempted by the devil. Always when God entrusts us with a mission, He also equips us with His Spirit, so that we are able to accomplish our mission by His authorization and power.
Yet, to make us fully aware of the fact that it is only His power that enables us to do His work, He leads us into the wilderness, in difficult circumstances. There our faith is tested, there we are purified and our own ‘ego’ is put to death. There it becomes clear whether we really seek God’s honor or whether we seek our own gain.
The devil is not interested in us when we just lead an outwardly religious life. But when we have devoted ourselves completely to the Lord and great things in the Kingdom start to happen through us, then the devil pays special attention to us. He draws upon our weaknesses and asks, ‘Did God not say…?’
No, the devil does not lurk especially in the nightlife or in the Internet. Preferably among the children of the Lord, he will masquerade as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14).
We would perish spiritually if we would not honor God in everything we do, therefore He lets our faith be tested before He involves us in His work. This is the reason why Jesus was tempted by the devil in the wilderness before He started His great work here on earth.
When in this way we too overcome the evil one in Jesus’ name, we will be filled with an unspeakable peace! Then we too will know that we are surrounded by God’s angels who will keep us safe on the ways of God.
